Default A New Threat to Your Budget..... - 06-15-2008

I don't know how many here are actually in the USA, but those who are must be aware of the incredible flooding going on in the midwest.

Most folks have been concerned about putting gas in their cars and heating their homes, but this flooding means that prices for vegetables will be climbing even more than they already have.

Have you started planning how you will get through the winter with food prices going much higher than anticipated?

We have started stocking our freezer! and I am buying seed for next summer's garden.

I think this food scarcity is only for underdevelopment country. And they will face the problem in any rate because they dont have freeze as you have. If they work, then they have food, if they dont work then there is no food for them. How could they store anything for tomorrow?

I think Diana is right. I live here in the USA and my husband and I fully expect the price of food to jump higher than it already is. We haven't gotten seed but that is a very good idea. We have been stocking our deep freezer and stocking up on canned vegetables too. Usually, walmart has 5lb bags of chicken leg quarters on sell for $4.99 and when we go, we buy 2 or 3 bags, cut them up and then freeze them.

Everything is bad enough without the added weather conditions that keep happening. It's hurting so many farmers and the people who buy groceries. They were high enough with bad crops and fuel prices.

We try to stock up what we can.If we had an extra freezer I'd be taking advantage of that.I am thinking about investing in a indoor gardening unit I saw at bed bath and beyond. They had it for fresh herbs but I think I'd be able to get away with some veggies.I really need to look into that more.At least for tomatoes. I think we will be using more canned veggies.I normally buy fresh.Though over the last 2 weeks I've needed to use more canned due to the store not having good produce. Then some of what they had was already going bad.

Yes, DianaR, I'm aware of what this will mean. I was listening to a discussion on the radio, in fact, where they were talking about how a lot of this flooding is in corn country, where a cold spring ALREADY was going to mean a late crop and reduced yields. Sigh ...

Food crisis, flooding, etc is not jst happen on USA.
Most part of this world face that too.
And i think flooding is a little bit linked with food crisis. Flood will leave infertile effect.

I hate going to the grocery store anymore as the prices just seem to keep going up and no end in sight. I wish I could make more money so offset some of these costs.

QFT, my friend, QFT. In fact, I've taken on a few odd jobs to supplement my 40-hour-a-week gig, just so my family stays "even" as far as lifestyle goes.

I am thinking about setting up a little hydroponic garden in the basement. I know a guy who will run extra electricity for very little. Since we have switched over to the CFLs for our lights upstairs, the fluorescent grow lights won't add too much to the electricity bill, which is going up as well, by the way!

IF I can find just on inexpensive photo voltaic panel for the roof to start out with, we could com ein under $600.00 for that including installation, using my electrical guy!
