Default Banking in India - 06-04-2008

Banking in India

The Reserve Bank of India is the central bank in India. It is the banker of the government, the commercial banks, and some of the financial institutions. All India’s largest banks were nationalized by 1980. There are four types of commercial banks. First, the State Bank of India with its subsidiaries, which is the biggest commercial bank in the country. The States Bank also carries out some of the functions of the Reserve Bank of India. Second are the nationalized banks. Third are the foreign banks, and fourth are the nationalized Indian Banks. Many of the large banks in India also provides as Merchant Bank.

The entry of private banks into the market has lead to increased pressure on the public sector banks (nationalized). They are now striving to excel in fields where they once have sort of monopoly (in domestic market!).
