Default Saving Money At Tax Time - 06-14-2008

This is just a little reminder to everyone out there who is bad at math.

Cost of using a tax firm to do your taxes:
Varies based on complexity of forms and locations, but almost never under $100.

Cost of using tax prep software on a home computer (which is all your "preparer" is probably using): Under $50.

Cost of e-filing with a tax preparation company or software: roughly $8 to $10.

Cost of postage to mail the forms yourself: $0.42 per stamp (I only used one stamp last year).

Cost of getting your refund "fast" with a instant refund loan:
Varies based on company, but a recent government study found that, calculated as APRs, the loans are ridiculously high, with an average APR of over 200%.

Cost of waiting for your actual refund check to arrive (or direct deposit): Nothing.

Don't be wasteful with your money next tax season. Do your own taxes, and be patient for your refund. It's the only sensible choice.
